Last updated: 15 September 2026
At Used Outboard Motors, we understand that purchasing a used outboard motor is a significant investment. Where a warranty is offered, our warranty is designed to provide customers with additional confidence in the engine they purchase.
The warranty applicable to an individual engine will always be the warranty stated on the relevant product page, quotation or sales documentation.

2. Warranty Period
Warranty periods vary depending on the individual outboard motor.
The applicable warranty period will be clearly stated on the relevant product listing or sales documentation.
For example, some engines may be advertised with:
2-year warranty
3-year warranty
The warranty period begins from the date specified in the applicable sales documentation.
Please refer to your individual product listing or invoice for the exact warranty period applicable to your engine.
3. What the Warranty Covers
Subject to the applicable product warranty, the warranty is intended to cover eligible mechanical or functional defects that arise during the stated warranty period under normal use.
Coverage may include qualifying failures of the engine’s major components where the failure is determined to be covered under the applicable warranty terms.
Because every used engine is different, the precise scope of coverage may vary between products.
4. Used Engine Condition
All engines covered by this policy are used products unless specifically stated otherwise.
Normal signs of previous use do not automatically constitute a warranty defect.
Used engines may have:
Cosmetic marks
Scratches
Paint imperfections
Surface corrosion appropriate to age/use
Normal wear to external components
The warranty concerns eligible defects covered by the applicable warranty terms and does not guarantee that a used engine will remain in new or showroom condition.
5. Warranty Requirements
To maintain warranty coverage, the engine should be:
Installed correctly;
Operated appropriately;
Properly maintained;
Used for its intended purpose;
Serviced when required;
Protected from avoidable damage.
We strongly recommend having the engine installed and commissioned by a suitably qualified marine technician.
Customers should retain relevant service records, invoices and other documentation relating to maintenance and repairs.
6. What Is Not Normally Covered
Unless expressly stated otherwise in the individual warranty documentation, the warranty does not normally cover damage or failure caused by:
Misuse or abuse;
Accidents or collisions;
Incorrect installation;
Incorrect rigging;
Neglect;
Lack of maintenance;
Overheating caused by external factors;
Running without adequate cooling water;
Incorrect fuel or oil;
Contaminated fuel;
Water contamination;
Freezing or environmental damage;
Corrosion caused by operating conditions or lack of appropriate care;
Unauthorised modifications;
Unauthorised repairs;
Alteration of the engine’s electrical or fuel systems;
Racing or competition use;
Improper storage;
Normal wear and tear;
Damage caused by external equipment or systems.
This list is illustrative and does not replace the specific terms applicable to your product.
7. Installation and Compatibility
The customer is responsible for ensuring that the outboard motor is compatible with their boat and properly installed.
Compatibility includes considerations such as:
Horsepower;
Shaft length;
Transom height;
Steering system;
Controls;
Electrical connections;
Fuel system;
Propeller;
Mounting requirements.
A failure resulting from an unsuitable installation or incompatible boat setup may not be covered by the warranty.
If you are unsure about compatibility, please contact us before purchasing or installing the engine.
8. Maintenance
Proper maintenance is essential for the reliable operation of any used outboard motor.
Customers should follow the relevant manufacturer’s maintenance requirements and ensure that appropriate servicing is carried out.
Depending on the engine, this may include:
Engine oil and filter changes;
Gearbox/lower-unit oil changes;
Spark plug replacement;
Cooling-system maintenance;
Fuel-system maintenance;
Impeller/water-pump maintenance;
Corrosion protection;
Battery and electrical-system checks.
Failure to carry out appropriate maintenance may affect warranty coverage where the lack of maintenance contributes to the failure.
9. Making a Warranty Claim
If you believe your engine has developed a warranty-related problem, please contact us before arranging repairs or dismantling the engine.
Contact:
Email: sales@usedoutboardmotors.co.uk
Phone: +44 7882760417
Please provide:
Your name;
Order/invoice number;
Engine details;
Date of purchase;
Description of the problem;
Photographs or videos where relevant;
Diagnostic information where available;
Details of any relevant maintenance or servicing.
We may request additional information to assess the claim.
10. Warranty Inspection
Before approving a warranty claim, we may need to inspect or arrange inspection of the engine.
This may involve:
Diagnostic testing;
Compression testing;
Inspection by a qualified technician;
Review of service records;
Examination of affected components;
Photographs or videos;
Other reasonable diagnostic procedures.
The purpose of an inspection is to establish the cause of the problem and determine whether it falls within the applicable warranty coverage.
11. Repairs
Where a warranty claim is accepted, we may, depending on the circumstances:
Repair the affected component;
Arrange for the engine to be inspected or repaired;
Replace an eligible component; or
Provide another appropriate remedy.
The specific remedy will depend on the nature of the failure, availability of parts and the applicable warranty terms.
We will discuss the proposed solution with the customer where appropriate.
12. Repairs Without Prior Approval
Customers should not authorise major repairs or dismantling at their own expense before contacting us.
If an engine is repaired or substantially dismantled without our prior agreement, it may become difficult to establish the original cause of the failure.
Unauthorised repairs may therefore affect the contractual warranty claim, subject always to applicable statutory rights.
13. Emergency Repairs
If an urgent situation occurs where immediate action is reasonably necessary to prevent significant additional damage, contact us as soon as possible.
We will assess the circumstances and advise you on the appropriate next steps.
Keep all relevant:
Invoices;
Receipts;
Technician reports;
Photographs;
Diagnostic information;
Removed components.
14. Warranty and Return Periods
A product may have both a return period and a warranty period.
These are separate arrangements.
For example, a product may be advertised with:
30-Day Return + 3-Year Warranty
The return period and warranty have different purposes and conditions.
Please review the specific product listing and our Returns & Refund Policy for information about returns.
15. Transfer of Warranty
Unless expressly agreed in writing, a warranty may be limited to the original purchaser and may not automatically transfer to a subsequent owner.
If you intend to sell or transfer an engine during the warranty period, please contact us to determine whether the warranty can be transferred.
16. Warranty Documentation
The applicable warranty information may be provided through:
The product listing;
Order confirmation;
Invoice;
Sales documentation;
Separate warranty documentation.
Where there is a difference between general information on this page and the specific warranty documentation supplied with an engine, the specific warranty terms applicable to that engine should be reviewed.
17. Manufacturer Warranties
Some used engines may have remaining manufacturer warranty coverage.
Where this applies, we will identify it where reasonably possible.
Any manufacturer warranty is subject to the manufacturer’s own terms, conditions and eligibility requirements.
18. Statutory Consumer Rights
This warranty is provided in addition to any statutory rights you may have under applicable UK consumer law.
Nothing in this Warranty Policy is intended to exclude, restrict or replace rights that cannot legally be excluded or restricted.
Your legal rights may apply regardless of whether a product is covered by our additional commercial warranty.
19. Changes to This Warranty Policy
We may update this Warranty Policy from time to time to reflect changes to our products, warranty arrangements, business practices or applicable legal requirements.
The latest version will be published on this page with the relevant update date.
Changes will not remove rights already applicable to an existing purchase where such rights cannot legally be removed.
